Does Medicare Cover Car Accidents?

Medically essential care, like as treatment after an automobile accident or other mishap, is covered by both Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Original Medicare (Parts A and B) plans.

However, Medicare is entitled to reimbursement of a portion of the settlement, judgment, or award if you get compensation from another party, such as the other motorist who caused the accident or their insurance provider.

Even if you were not to blame for the vehicle accident, you should still get medical help as quickly as you can.

Getting medical attention right after can assist bolster any claims you make later against the guilty party. Medicare will be compensated for your care if it pays for your initial treatment and you later settle with the liable party.

It’s crucial to notify Medicare if you or your lawyer bring a claim against someone else accountable for the accident.

What Medicare covers for a car accident

If you are hospitalized

Medicare Part A will pay for your care and any diagnostic tests you obtain while in the hospital if you are admitted as an inpatient because of injuries you sustained in an automobile accident. Medicare Part A will pay for the ER visit as part of your hospital stay if you are admitted within three days of a relevant ER visit.

After you achieve the deductible for the inpatient hospital benefit period, Medicare will start to pay.

You won’t incur any extra expenses after paying the deductible unless you need to stay in the hospital for more than sixty days. You can be required to pay more each day if you remain longer.

If you get emergency or urgent care without hospital admission

Medicare Part B covers outpatient care at an urgent care facility or emergency department if you require medical assistance following a car accident and are not admitted to the hospital.

You will be required to pay 20% of the cost of any service or test you receive after you have met your Part B deductible. This may include:

  • diagnostic testing like X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans
  • treatment
  • durable medical equipment, such as crutches or a walker
  • physical therapy
  • mental health care

What Medicare Part C covers for a car accident

Plans covered by Medicare Part C (Advantage) must offer coverage equal to or greater than that of Medicare Parts A and B.

Medically necessary treatment for injuries received in an automobile accident is also covered by a Medicare Part C plan.
